acid deposition
A type of pollution which washes out of the atmosphere as dilute sulphuric and nitric acids. It tends to be a regional rather than a global phenomenon, linked to particular industrial activities and meteorological conditions. It includes rain, more than normally acidic snow, mist, sleet, fog, gas and dry particles. It upsets the balance of nature, disrupting ecosystems, and destroys forests and woodlands, plants and crops; kills aquatic life by altering the chemical balance of lakes and rivers and corrodes building materials and fabrics. The pollutants are caused principally by discharges from power station chimneys of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides released by burning fossil fuels, coal and oil. (Source: WRIGHT)

The " wet " or dilute sulphuric acid process is now almost entirely superseded for rags by the " dry " or hydrochloric acid gas treatment, because the colours of the rags do not " bleed " so much as with the wet process. The gas is generated in a retort placed beside the extracting chamber. In the retort is placed a mixture of common salt and sulphuric acid, or the gas is produced by merely heating liquid hydrochloric acid (spirits of salt). The extracting chamber consists of a revolving cylindrical cage, contained in a cased iron vessel heated by steam In this the rags are subjected to the acid fumes. The rags are slightly moistened by steam to facilitate the action of the acid on the cotton. The inside of the cylinder is covered with hooks, and, as it turns slowly, the rags are carried up and drop from the hooks, ensuring a thorough contact with the gas. The operation is complete in three hours. After the carbonising, the shoddy is put through a burr crushing machine, where the charred vegetable matter is removed. SUBJECT AREA: Chemical technology[br]b. 1797 Englandd. 1864[br]English pioneer in the extraction of paraffin.[br]Gesner qualified as a physician in London in 1827 and developed an interest in geology. Possibly through his friendship with Admiral Thomas Cochrane, later tenth Earl of Dundonald, he began experimenting with asphalt rock from Trinidad; he obtained several patents for the processes he employed to extract an oil from the rock. In 1853 the Asphalt Mining and Kerosene Company was founded to work his patents, which described how to purify the liquid produced by the dry distillation of asphalt, by mixing the liquid first with 5–10 per cent by volume of sulphuric acid to remove tars, and then with freshly calcined lime to remove water. It was then redistilled to produce an inflammable oil. Gesner called it kerosene, from the Greek keros, meaning "wax"; in Britain it came to be known as paraffin. The new oil sold well, especially when accompanied by a cheap lamp with a flat wick and glass chimney. By 1856 Gesner considered his product could replace whale oil as a fuel for lamps; success was short-lived, however, for the oil was overtaken three years later by the drilling of the first American petroleum wells.LRD -

18 Lisle Finish
The fabric is treated in a weak solution of sulphuric or hydrochloric acid and then dried before washing out the acid. The fabric is then placed in a machine that exposes it to the air and heated to about 100 deg. F. After a time the loose ends and fuzzy fibres become brittle and break off in the tumbling given to the fabric by the machine. When the proper finish is obtained the fabric is cooled and washed in an alkaline bath which stops the action of the dry acid and neutralises it.
